Why It Matters

Why Battery Pack Temperature Sensors Are Critical

In lithium-ion battery systems, temperature is the single most important variable affecting safety, performance, and cycle life. Accurate, real-time temperature monitoring is not optional -- it is a fundamental requirement for any responsible BMS design.

Over-Temperature Protection

Lithium cells can enter thermal runaway above critical thresholds. A reliable battery temperature sensor enables the BMS to trigger protection circuits before damage or fire occurs.

Charge/Discharge Optimization

BMS algorithms use real-time temperature data to optimize charging rates and discharge limits, directly extending battery cycle life and protecting cell chemistry.

Thermal Management Control

In EV and ESS applications, multi-point NTC sensor harnesses feed thermal management systems -- controlling cooling fans, liquid cooling loops, and heating elements.

Regulatory & Safety Compliance

Many international standards for EV batteries and ESS require documented temperature monitoring. Certified NTC sensors help you meet UL, IEC, and automotive safety requirements.

Accurate SOC/SOH Estimation

Temperature compensation is essential for accurate State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH) calculations. Poor temperature sensing leads to inaccurate battery capacity readings.

Module-Level Uniformity

Multi-point NTC harnesses detect temperature gradients across battery modules, helping identify imbalanced cells and enabling proactive maintenance before field failures occur.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from battery pack engineers and procurement teams.

What is the standard NTC resistance value for battery pack BMS applications?
The most widely used NTC resistance value for lithium battery BMS applications is 10 KΩ at 25°C. This is the default for the majority of BMS chips and reference designs. However, some BMS designs use 50 KΩ or 100 KΩ. We can produce any resistance value -- please confirm your BMS specification or share your R-T table and we will match it exactly.
What B-value should I specify for my battery temperature sensor?
The B-value defines the resistance-temperature (R-T) curve of the NTC. For battery pack applications, B3435 (referenced at 25°C/85°C) and B3950 (referenced at 25°C/50°C) are the most common. Your BMS chip datasheet or firmware configuration will specify which B-value is expected. If you have an R-T table or B-value specification from your BMS supplier, share it with us and we will produce sensors matched to that curve.
Can you produce multi-point NTC sensor harnesses for battery modules?
Yes. Multi-point NTC harnesses are one of our core products. We manufacture harnesses with 4, 6, 8, 12, or more NTC sensing points, all terminated into a single BMS connector. Each NTC probe can have its own cable length and routing to match your battery module layout. We work from your drawing, sample, or a description of your battery pack geometry and BMS connector pinout.
What connector types can you use for the BMS interface?
We support JST (PH, XH, ZH, GH series), Molex (Micro-Fit 3.0, Mini-Fit Jr.), TE/AMP, and bare wire or tinned ends. If your BMS uses a proprietary or customer-specified connector, please provide the part number or a sample connector and we will source and assemble it. Our goal is a plug-and-play assembly that fits your BMS interface without modification.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom battery temperature sensors?
For standard NTC sensors with common resistance and B-values, MOQ starts from 500-1,000 pcs. For fully custom cable assemblies and harnesses, MOQ is typically 500-2,000 pcs depending on complexity. Samples (5-50 pcs) are available before committing to production orders. Contact us with your volume forecast and we will advise on the most cost-effective approach.
How long does it take to get samples of a custom battery temperature sensor?
For most custom configurations, sample lead time is 7-14 business days after design confirmation and purchase order. Simpler configurations (e.g., standard NTC with custom cable length and JST connector) can often be completed in 5-7 days. Complex multi-point harnesses with custom connectors may require 10-15 days. We provide a measurement report with each sample shipment.
Are your battery temperature sensors AEC-Q200 qualified?
We can provide AEC-Q200 reliability test reports conducted by CNAS-accredited third-party laboratories. These tests cover temperature cycling, thermal shock, humidity resistance, resistance to soldering heat, mechanical stress, and long-term stability. If your project requires AEC-Q200 documentation, please specify this in your inquiry and we will include the cost and timeline in our quotation.
What cable insulation should I choose for a battery pack environment?
The choice depends on your operating temperature and environment: PVC is cost-effective for standard battery packs operating below 80°C. Silicone is recommended for high-flexibility requirements or temperatures up to 200°C. XLPE (irradiation crosslinked) provides superior voltage insulation and is preferred for high-voltage ESS applications. PTFE/Teflon is used where chemical resistance is required. If you are unsure, share your operating conditions and we will recommend the most appropriate cable material.
Can you produce battery temperature sensors for high-voltage ESS applications?
Yes. We have 8 dedicated production lines for energy storage system (ESS) sensors. Our ESS NTC sensors feature pure nickel strip electrodes, XLPE or silicone cable, and enhanced insulation designed for high-voltage battery pack environments. We can specify insulation voltage ratings to match your system voltage. Please provide your pack voltage, insulation requirement, and operating temperature range in your inquiry.
What information do I need to provide to get a quotation?
To provide an accurate quotation, it helps to have: (1) NTC resistance value (R25) and B-value or R-T table; (2) Resistance tolerance/accuracy required; (3) Probe type or installation method; (4) Cable type, gauge, and length; (5) Connector type and pinout (or BMS connector part number); (6) Number of NTC sensing points (single or multi-point); (7) Operating temperature range; (8) Annual volume or order quantity. You can also send a drawing, sample, or BMS specification document and we will extract the relevant parameters.
Do you provide a measurement report or test data sheet with each shipment?
Yes. A batch test report confirming resistance value, tolerance, and continuity is available for each production lot. For sample shipments, we include a measurement report as standard. For production orders, batch reports can be provided upon request. If your quality system requires specific documentation (e.g., PPAP, FMEA, control plan), please advise us during the quotation stage.
Can you match a competitor's battery temperature sensor or replicate a sample?
Yes. If you send us a sample of your existing battery temperature sensor, we can measure the NTC resistance, B-value, cable type, connector, and probe dimensions, and produce an equivalent or improved replacement. This is a common request from customers who want to qualify a second source or reduce costs. Please send 2-3 samples along with your current sensor datasheet (if available) and target pricing.
